The power of change through repentance

Life allows us to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions lead to bad consequences and difficult times to accuse us of it; we feel bad and sad. We live a process of repentance for these decisions, but for many people, repentance is something bad that we need to avoid. For this reason, the purpose of this blog is to reflect on repentance from a religious and psychological perspective, creating a new perspective about repentance.

Repentance starts when we make a mistake or do nothing, The feelings that arise because of it are not good, the Elder Claudio D. Zivic general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said the next "but the real torment in life is to suffer the consequences of our own shortcomings and sins which we inflict upon ourselves¨ (Elder Claudio D. Zivic, 2007). Eventually, it’s not comfortable to live with those feelings, but there is the wrong: repentance it’s not only feel that, repentance is the opportunity for change and improve.

If we change our perspective, repentance will be a healing process and a second opportunity to do good things. The most important part is to leave the past and not stay in it, Michelle P. Maidenberg a mental health professional commented ¨Staying stuck in the past will inevitably evoke more anger, anxiety, shame, and disappointment¨  (Michelle P. Maidenberg, 2011). Repentance does not exist for suffer the whole life, repentance exists to have an opportunity to improve "which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually" (English Online Version The Book of Mormon, 2013, Mosiah 5:2).

Seeing repentance as a good process, perspective changes, now we know that it is not necessary to suffer the whole life, we have the perspective to be better, the goal of leaving all our mistakes, the goal of  "Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit" (English Online Version The Bible, 2013, Ezekiel 18:31

Therefore, repentance is not the pain, repentance is the process of overcoming that pain: "There is only one way to rid ourselves of this suffering. It is by means of sincere repentance" ( Elder Claudio D. Zivic, 2007). There is no need to be too demanding with oneself or to be perfect, it is normal to make mistakes, when we are too demanding the pain to be wrong is greater, "Behind every guilty man there is a demanding"  (Canal Jorge Bucay, 2018, 13m24s)

In view of all the above, in the future days, when we make mistakes, we will know what to do; suffer for a little time the consequences, but not for a long time, and then, have the purpose to be better, leave those feelings and learn.
